About Lingoda

Lingoda is an innovative online language learning platform that began its journey with a straightforward mission - to break down language barriers and build bridges between cultures. From its establishment in 2013 in Berlin, Germany, Lingoda has steadily grown into an esteemed online language school, offering English, Business English, Spanish, French, and, significantly, German courses. The platform serves a diverse global audience, guided by its commitment to providing quality language education to learners at various proficiency levels.

Specific to its German language courses, Lingoda offers an array of options to cater to different learning needs. These range from beginner courses to advanced language proficiency classes, ensuring every learner can find the right fit. The courses are designed to guide learners through the essential aspects of German, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural nuances. Furthermore, they align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), ensuring international recognition of the language skills students acquire. Although this certificate is good at gauging your progress, there is no final exam at the end of each level. It is recommended to check your organizations (e.g. University or visa application) to be sure that this specific certificate would be accepted.

In the next sections, we delve deeper into the specifics of these German language courses, critically evaluating their value for learners with varied needs and goals.

Methodology of Evaluation

To provide a comprehensive and objective review of Lingoda's German language courses, we have designed a thorough evaluation process. This process is based on several key factors that significantly influence the overall learning experience and outcomes.

1. Course Structure:

We assess the syllabus, course materials, and the overall design of the courses. This includes an examination of how the levels are segmented, the topics covered, the learning objectives defined for each level, and the progression from one level to the next.

2. Quality of Teaching:

This involves a detailed review of the teaching methods adopted, the qualifications and experience of the teachers, and the level of interaction between teachers and students. We also consider how effectively feedback is provided and how promptly any queries or issues are addressed.

3. Cost-effectiveness:

In this aspect, we evaluate the pricing of the courses relative to the quality and quantity of the learning materials and instruction provided. We compare Lingoda's pricing with that of similar online language learning platforms to assess its value for money.

4. Flexibility:

Here, we review the options Lingoda provides for scheduling lessons and progressing through the courses. This includes considerations such as the availability of lessons, the frequency of classes, and the ability for learners to learn at their own pace.

5. User Interface:

The platform's ease of use plays a crucial role in the learning experience. Therefore, we analyze the design and functionality of Lingoda's platform, including aspects such as ease of navigation, accessibility of course materials, and any technical issues that might affect learning.

Detailed Review of Lingoda German Language Courses

Course Structure

Lingoda’s German courses are meticulously designed to facilitate a gradual progression in language acquisition. Each course level aligns with the CEFR guidelines, which begin at A1 (Beginner) and advance through to C1 (Proficient User). Within five main levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1) there are sub-levels that enable a more targeted approach to learning and ensure the comprehensive mastery of each linguistic aspect before moving on. The materials cover a broad range of topics, providing learners with a well-rounded understanding of not just the language, but also the cultural nuances.

Quality of Teaching

The quality of teaching is a standout aspect of Lingoda's German courses. Teachers at Lingoda are native German speakers, possessing both academic qualifications in teaching German and considerable experience. They employ immersive learning techniques, including real-life scenarios and dialogues to help learners use German in a practical context. Classes are interactive, encouraging students to actively participate in conversations, which tremendously boosts their speaking and listening skills. Moreover, with a maximum of five students per class, each learner receives personalized attention.

Cost-effectiveness

Lingoda offers various pricing plans to suit different budgets and learning goals. While the cost may appear higher compared to some self-learning apps, the value derived in terms of live interaction with qualified teachers, well-structured syllabi, and high-quality learning materials justifies the price. The small group class size also means that learners essentially get a semi-private tutoring experience, which, when compared to private tutoring rates, offers good value for money.

For reference, courses can run between around 10 to 15 euros per class, becoming cheaper with the more you will buy at once. The sprint and super sprint challenges can give you a significant amount of your money back if you complete them successfully.

Be sure to check out their website for up-to-date costs.

Flexibility

Lingoda offers a high degree of flexibility, making it an appealing choice for learners with varied schedules. Classes are available 24/7, which allows learners to pick a time slot that fits their routine best. Furthermore, learners can choose their learning pace and intensity - from casual learning to more intensive courses aimed at faster progression.

User Interface

The Lingoda platform is intuitive and user-friendly. Signing up for a course, scheduling classes, and accessing learning materials can be done with ease. Lessons are conducted via Zoom, a reliable and widely-used video communication tool. Although the platform's design is not flashy, it is functional and straightforward, focusing on delivering a smooth learning experience rather than unnecessary embellishments. Occasional technical glitches are promptly addressed by their responsive customer support.

2. Qualified Native Teachers:

Having native German speakers with professional teaching qualifications deliver the lessons significantly enhances the quality of instruction. It ensures accurate pronunciation, grammar, and a genuine cultural context.

3. Small Class Sizes:

With a maximum of five students per class, each learner receives individual attention and ample opportunity to participate actively in each lesson.

4. Flexible Learning Schedule:

Lingoda's 24/7 availability of classes gives learners the flexibility to schedule lessons at their convenience. This makes it a viable learning platform for people with various time commitments.

5. Certificate of Completion:

Lingoda provides CEFR-aligned certificates for each completed level, which can be beneficial for job applications or educational requirements. Although this certificate is good at gauging your progress, there is no final exam at the end of each level. It is recommended to check your organizations (e.g. University or visa application) to be sure that this specific certificate would be accepted.

6. Self-Study Resources

A crucial aspect of Lingoda's learning approach is the emphasis on self-study between live classes. The platform provides an extensive suite of resources available directly on their website. These resources, which include exercises, quizzes, flashcards, and concept summaries, aim to reinforce the learning achieved during live classes and further enhance language proficiency.

These self-study resources are easily accessible on the Lingoda website and can be utilized at any time that suits the learner. While it requires self-discipline to consistently use these resources, the benefits to language learning are substantial.

7. Opportunity for significant cost reduction:

Lingoda German classes start at about 10EUR. If you win the Super Sprint, and choose to get the cash back, the cost per class is actually as low as 7 EUR. If you decide to get back class credits instead of cash back, you receive 75 additional lessons on top of the 60 you completed and the cost per lesson is only 6.20.

Check the up-to-date costs on their website here.

Cons

1. Cost:

While Lingoda offers great value for money given the quality of instruction and materials, its pricing might be higher compared to self-learning apps. However, when compared to traditional language schools or private tutoring, the cost can be seen as reasonable.

As stated above in the ‘Pros’, this cost can be significantly reduced by challenging yourself with the Super Sprint. Take the challenge! We did the 60 classes and succeeded!

Be sure to check out their website for up to date costs.

2. No Mobile App:

As of our review, Lingoda does not have a dedicated mobile app. While their website is mobile-friendly, a dedicated app often provides a more streamlined and accessible learning experience for many users. However, there is still a significant amount of learning material (exercises, flash cards, quizzes, etc.) to be used outside of class on their website once you are registered to a class.

3. Dependence on Internet Connectivity:

As the lessons are live and online, learners with unstable internet connections may face interruptions during their classes.

4. Cancellation Policy:

Lingoda has a strict 7-day cancellation policy for booked classes, which might not offer enough flexibility for some learners.

Lingoda Comparison to Other Online German Language Platforms

When choosing an online language learning platform, it's essential to compare the features and offerings of various competitors. Here, we place Lingoda in direct comparison with other popular online German language learning platforms like Babbel, Duolingo, and Rosetta Stone.

Babbel vs. Lingoda:

Babbel is an app-based learning platform that emphasizes self-learning through interactive exercises. Compared to Lingoda, it lacks live classes with native speakers and the interpersonal communication aspect of language learning. However, Babbel's pricing is more affordable, making it a good choice for learners on a budget. Unlike Babbel, Lingoda provides a structured, classroom-like experience with personalized attention from qualified teachers, which can lead to faster and more comprehensive language acquisition. In addition, Lingoda also offers self-study materials to be used outside of class.

Duolingo vs. Lingoda:

Duolingo is a free-to-start language learning app that uses gamification to make language learning enjoyable. While it's useful for learning vocabulary and basic grammar, it falls short in offering comprehensive language learning, particularly in areas like pronunciation, complex grammar, and conversation skills. Duolingo doesn't offer live classes, unlike Lingoda, which provides a well-rounded learning experience with live instruction, comprehensive materials (quizzes, flash cards & exercises outside of class), and real-life conversation practice.

Rosetta Stone vs. Lingoda:

Rosetta Stone, one of the oldest players in the field of language learning, offers language instruction based on the immersive method. This platform provides lessons focusing on listening and repeating exercises but lacks the direct interaction with a live teacher, which Lingoda offers. While Rosetta Stone does provide live tutoring at additional costs, these classes are generally larger and less frequent than Lingoda's.

Moreover, Lingoda offers CEFR-aligned certificates upon course completion, something that Rosetta Stone does not provide. Although this certificate is good at gauging your progress, there is no final exam at the end of each level. It is recommended to check your organizations (e.g. University or visa application) to be sure that this specific certificate would be accepted.

In conclusion, while each of these platforms has its strengths, Lingoda stands out for its structured, comprehensive approach to language learning, live classes with qualified teachers, and alignment with CEFR standards. This makes it a potent choice for learners who seek a classroom-like experience and desire comprehensive language proficiency.

Our Personal and Honest Review of using Lingoda to learn German

As parents with two small children, finding time for personal growth and skill development is undoubtedly a challenge. Yet, it is this aspect where Lingoda has been tremendously beneficial for us in our journey of learning German.

The flexibility Lingoda provides with its round-the-clock availability of classes has been a godsend. We have had the freedom to schedule our lessons in the early morning at 5 am, a time when our household is still enveloped in sleep, or late at night at 9 pm, after the kids have settled into their slumbers. This flexibility has allowed us to consistently engage with our lessons, despite the demanding nature of our schedules.

What we also appreciate about Lingoda is the freedom to choose our classes based on our mood or the specific challenges we are facing living in Germany. The course structure, which allows us to pick our lessons, has made our learning process feel personalized and more relevant to our needs.

However, our experience has not been without its downsides. Lingoda's strict cancellation policy has been a source of frustration for us. Given the unpredictable nature of our lives, especially with young children, unforeseen circumstances often arise, forcing us to cancel or reschedule our classes. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the loss of numerous course credits that we couldn't get refunded, which feels like a significant drawback.

With all of that being said, Lingoda has by far been our favorite and preferred way to learning the language. For real classes with real people, Lingoda has the best to fit our schedules and learning needs.

Our Experience with the Lingoda Super Sprint Challenge

One of the unique offerings of Lingoda that we decided to undertake was the Super Sprint Challenge. This challenge involves attending 60 classes in 60 days, a substantial commitment, but one that promises significant rewards in terms of language proficiency.

One of the huge drivers to undertake this challenge, is the ability to get back 50% of your money if you successfully complete it. This is a HUGE advantage to using Lingoda to learn German or any other language they offer if you’re willing to commit.

After completing the Super Sprint Challenge, we can confidently say that this endeavor was indeed a turning point in our journey of learning German. It required dedication and consistency, but the results were well worth the effort. With daily practice, our fluency improved considerably. The continual exposure to the language helped us in reinforcing our vocabulary, understanding the intricacies of German grammar, and becoming comfortable with spoken German. We were able to more effortlessly construct sentences, engage in meaningful conversations, and express our thoughts clearly.

It is worth mentioning that the success in the Super Sprint Challenge depends largely on the learners' time management and commitment. With two small children, we had to be creative in carving out dedicated time each day for our classes. We also found it helpful to review the lesson materials in advance and reinforce the learning afterward to ensure maximum benefit from each class.

For anyone considering the Lingoda Super Sprint Challenge, we would highly recommend it, given you can manage the time commitment. The intensive immersion in the language it provides is invaluable and can significantly expedite your journey towards fluency. However, remember that this challenge requires dedication and consistency, so make sure you are prepared for the commitment before you embark on it.
